Quote from Peter Hirshberg: "When we talk about big data or Internet of Things, it turns out that it's less about big data and more about small data."

DURHAM, N.C.–()–TransLoc, a technology provider with a mission to help public transit agencies reimagine and deploy any possible microtransit scenario to deliver the ultimate rider experience, today announced that it has appointed Peter Hirshberg to serve as strategic advisor. As an advisor, Hirshberg draws on his 25 years of experience in technology, civic engagement and urban innovation to support the TransLoc leadership team as the company enables transit agencies to remain central to the future of modern transportation.

“TransLoc is helping to drive the future of mobility and I’m pleased to be a part of steering the company,” said Hirshberg. “TransLoc’s innovative products and services are closing the information gap between riders and transit providers, a critical step for delivering on the promise of sustainable transportation and sustainable cities.”

Hirshberg created the Maker City Project, a national organization working with over 100 U.S. cities and towns to reclaim manufacturing prowess by leveraging independent inventors and designers. He is a co-author of the eponymous 2016 best seller, “The Maker City.” Hirshberg has led urban open data and open innovation initiatives on three continents, leading to dozens of applications, while engaging hundreds of citizens, software developers, urbanists and artists in smart city development. He is also founder of The Gray Area Foundation for Art and Technology, a leading center for urban prototyping and research San Francisco.

As chairman of The Re:imagine Group, Mr. Hirshberg shapes strategies and marketing for a world of empowered and connected audiences and customers including GE, Unilever, IBM and Verizon. Peter served as strategic adviser to the United Nations Global Pulse research team, an initiative of the Secretary General’s office to use emerging big data techniques to help vulnerable populations in real-time. Previously, Hirshberg headed enterprise marketing at Apple Computer where he grew large business and government revenue to $1 billion annually.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Peter to the TransLoc family,” said TransLoc CEO Doug Kaufman. “We look forward to learning from his experience with open data, the maker movement and smart cities. Applying Peter’s expertise to TransLoc adds enormous value as we leverage big data to help solve mobility issues and work towards becoming the leading software-as-a-service partner for transit agencies nationwide.”

TransLoc has achieved major growth in its municipal customer base, representing the addition of more than 12 million annual riders on its platform. The company also recently announced the availability of TransLoc Architect, a free open-source web application for transit agencies to manage real-time data on popular trip planning apps like Google Transit.
