TransLoc and Estuary Transit District

Free rides help residents get to work faster

DURHAM, N.C., May 10, 2019 – TransLoc, a Ford Smart Mobility company*, announces the launch of XtraMile, an agency-owned microtransit service with Estuary Transit District in Centerbrook, Connecticut.

XtraMile is an on-demand rideshare service. Using the Microtransit smartphone app, passengers can request a free ride to pick them up and drop them off wherever they want to travel within the service boundaries.

“We are extremely excited to launch XtraMile in our community,” said Estuary Transit District Executive Director Joseph Comerford. “XtraMile will benefit the workforce in our service area, filling in transportation gaps and providing a more effective way for people to get to and from their places of employment. We also expect the microtransit service to enhance the experience of our tourist community visiting from New York City and other nearby areas.”

Throughout the six month pilot, the initial service area will cover Old Saybrook, Essex, and Westbrook, CT. If the program proves to be successful, Estuary Transit plans to continue the service with a nominal cost to riders. The shuttles are equipped with wheelchair lifts, and drivers are trained to assist individuals with disabilities.

“The pilot program aims to solve for the first-mile/last-mile obstacle that many local commuters face as train stations are not always easily accessible from places of employment,” said TransLoc Vice President of Customers Ron Cygnarowicz. “TransLoc is enthusiastic about this partnership and the ability to enhance the mobility experience of many Connecticut residents by providing an innovative and equitable transportation option.”

XtraMile is available weekdays between 6 a.m.-8 p.m. and on Saturdays between 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. If passengers don’t have a smartphone, they can order a ride by calling the dispatch center at 860-510-0429 or by simply boarding a shuttle at a train station and telling the driver where they need to go. The microtransit pilot program runs through early November.
